Graduate Womxn in ChemE (GWiChE) is a student-led organization founded in the Fall of 2018 to support graduate womxn in the chemical engineering department at MIT by creating a space where we can come together to socialize, host speakers, and work to promote positive change in the department. We use the term “womxn” to include anyone who identifies as a woman or any gender minority. This may include transgender women, cisgender women, and non-binary people.
We understand the use of the term “womxn,” or how it is defined, can be controversial. We are actively learning about these nuances and will continually revisit and improve our organization’s name as well as our practices and viewpoints (and we encourage those interested in these topics to engage with us in this discussion!). Our goal is to create a space where people who feel “othered” by their gendered experiences in the department can come together in a supportive environment. We welcome all people who identify with this mission to our group and events.
